In Spring 2006, at Open Secret Bookstore in San Rafael, California, Lama Tharchin Rinpoche taught how the phenomenal world and its inhabitants came into being, what makes our experience of this world worse, and how we can make it better, saying:

“During this degenerate time when our mental habits are becoming grosser, our afflictive emotions are becoming more turbulent, and our outer circumstances are becoming increasingly difficult, how can we accomplish not only the noble goal of world peace but go beyond that to attain universal peace? The degeneration part is the bad news. The good news is that according to Guru Rinpoche Padmasambhava’s Dzogchen Great Perfection teachings, however strong the afflictive emotions you have, that much greater wisdom you have. These are like the two sides of your hand. Which side do you want to turn up, and which side do you want to turn down? We have a choice. We have a chance.”
